Week in Review

Today is Sunday November 2nd, 2008 and this past week has been okay. I haven’t been doing much seeing as Tuesday the car went in the shop for a new tie rod on the passenger side but the mechanic put the new one on the driver’s side. Which isn’t all that big of a deal since both sides should be replaced at the same time anyhow but due to the danger of driving with bad tie rods I haven’t been driving around. We really bit a bullet with the tie rods and driving 65-70 MPH on the highway back and fourth to the hospital twice. The wheel could have flown right off.

Monday and Tuesday was full of busy work testing and hardening two servers which I hate doing because it’s boring but it needed to be done.

On Wednesday or Thursday, I forget which my internet was down all day. Calling the cable company for support was maddening as I wrote about here that led to a day of lost productivity but a day off the computer was a nice change of pace.

Let’s see during the whole week I was pretty much on a night schedule going to sleep about 5 AM and waking up at 2 or 3. I switched around towards the end of the week and am now up bright and earlier what for I don’t know I can do my internet work any time of day, ya know. ;)

On Thursday Ubuntu 8.10 aka Intrepid Ibex was released. I’d previously removed Ubuntu from both my laptop and desktop and was running it in Virtual Machines on Vista but decided with the new release to repartition and install it on both the laptop and desktop. All in all not much is new for the end user, the guest session feature is nice but I won’t use it. Pidgin’s status being integrated into the panel is a real nice feature which I’m sure I’ll use in the future.

I’ve rediscovered gOS which is a light weight super easy to use Linux distribution based on Ubuntu. I had previously played around with it in virtual machines but decided to install it on my old desktop which is out in the living room. I only use that computer rarely as mom uses XP to play games on but I set-up dual boot so I can have my spot worry free from viruses and other nasties since my (computer-illiterate ) sister often uses that computer to surf the web. So far I really like gOS, and am contemplating installing it on my main laptop to use more often. Look for a review soon.

Other than that not much else went on this week. I started using Paint.net on Windows for basic picture cropping and resizing. While I realize the application can do much more that’s all I need it for, I’ve been using GIMP for a long time but it just takes too long to startup on Windows.

Saturday I backed up my files to my external hard drive which I mentioned before; it’s just so much easier then burning DVDs. I’ve even begun to make incremental backups, I just make a new folder on the HD with the date and copy over Documents, Music, Pictures, and Videos to that folder so if I accidentally deleted something in between backups I still have it.

This week I hope to start walking some as I’ve put the brakes on that since it’s gotten cold out because the only winter coat I have is a leather trench coat which isn’t cheap to have cleaned and I therefore don’t want to sweat it up. I’ll be ordering a set of long johns this week, hopefully I’ll be able to walk with long john’s sweats and a sweat shirt.

How was your week?
